Discussion: Nuclear Power Accident and Public Health

Nuclear power plants operate worldwide with about 100 nuclear reactors operating in the U.S.  The U.S. federal government maintains oversight of nuclear power plants through two agencies: NRC and FEMA.  All nuclear power plants need to have an emergency response plan in the event of an accident prior to receiving a license to operate.  There have been various nuclear incidents but one of the largest nuclear accidents occurred on 26 April 1986, at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

Please answer the following:

  1. Does the United States’ emergency response plan have a process for managing a major nuclear disaster?
  2. Discuss the medical response preparedness plans in communities co-located with nuclear plants.
  3. Is your community at risk of a nuclear disaster?
