Statement 1: The criminal justice system is one of the most organized and structured institutions in the country. Their basic function in enforcing laws, processing, and holding trials, and punishing offenders, is one of the systemic measures keeping our societies safe. Law enforcement agencies make the frontline warriors that daily protect our communities.
Statement 2: our criminal justice system picture-perfect? The answer to this question will depend on personal interactions, engagements, and perceptions about the criminal justice system. I would argue that though our system may not be perfect and may have areas needing improvement, it is still far more advanced than most. One of the things that make our criminal justice system so great is that we as citizens have the power through advocacy to change what we disagree with. At one time, there was significant support for capital punishment in America; however, as of 1994, support for capital punishment is declining, reaching an all-time low in 2015 (Sarat et al., 2017). The authors argue that the decline has too due to a change in public opinion and the rhetoric used by capital punishment abolitionists to persuade individuals that innocent individuals are being put to death (Sarat et al., 2017). Through activism, public opinion has caused lawmakers to take a serious look at capital punishment in our country.
