EDITORIAL RESPONSE: Policy Proposition


For this assignment you will need to select an opinionated article (editorial, column, letter) from a major newspaper (or online). Pick one that you find interesting and/or you have a strong reaction when reading it. It will need to base on a policy issue.  After reading your chosen article, respond to the following in a short essay:

Briefly summarize the author’s main point/argument. Why did they write this article? What are they trying to convince you of?

What is the author’s intended proposal?

What is your reaction? Do you agree or disagree with the author’s argument/ beliefs? Does this opinion anger/upset you? Are you sad? Glad?

Identify three arguments or points that you feel is exceptionally compelling. What is it about the point that makes it good?

Identify three argument or points that could be improved upon. How might the author have made it better?

Propose a policy:

1) Provide three harms in your position ( This must be supported with evidence)

What programs currently exist? If any?

What repairs are available and why do they preclude

What in the structure of current programs causes the

problems?

2) Provide a PLAN ( cure, agency, cost,

What must the plan do to solve the problems or gain the

advantages?

Is a new agency needed to administer the plan or can a

present agency

be modified in some way?

What will the agency or department be required to do?

What enforcement is necessary for solvency?

How much funding will the plan require?

How will the funding be used?

What will be the sources of funding?

How long will it take?

This paper should be typed and no more than 3-5 pages in length. A well-developed paragraph for each of the above points should suffice. Use supported evidence and logic to validate your points.
