First, read…
“Genres: Writing Responds to Repeating Situations through Recognizable Forms” in Writing about Writing p. 17-21
Tony Mirabelli,”Learning to Serve: The Language and Literacy of Food Service Workersdownload ” in Writing about Writing p. 298-317
– What seems to be Mirabelli’s research question and where does he state it? What kind of data did Mirabelli focus on the genre of the menu? Is this an effective focus for him as he attempts to answer the research question you identified above? Why or why not?
– What does Mirabelli mean when he discusses “multiliteracies”? What do you think of this concept?
-Mirabelli spends a good deal of his analysis focusing on the genre of the menu, and in doing so, he also discusses the diner’s lexis and methods of communication. Pick a genre that is familiar to you and explain how it works as a genre. For example, what actions does it make possible? What makes it recognizable? What makes it recognizable? What are its recognizable patterns? What about a syllabus, for instance, is typical across situations? How do you know a syllabus when you see one? Why is this form used repeatedly? Why is it helpful that people (in the syllabus example, teachers) have a common way of communicating in a particular recurring situation (in the syllabus example, for instance, of conveying expectations every time they teach a new group of students)? If you can, bring an example or two of the genre you looked at with you to class.
– Feel free, too, to comment on anything else you consider to be relevant or useful in Mirabelli’s or Halvey’s articles.
