Part 4: Essay Questions (50 marks). Write a short essay about ONE of the following topics. Your essay should be approximately 1000 words long, include a clear thesis statement, use quotations and proper MLA citation, and should provide detailed close reading and analysis.
1. Using ONE of the Alice Munro or Haruki Murakami stories from Week 5, examine the mystery of other people and how that particular text develops and uses this idea.
2. The unreliable narrator of Haruki Murakamis Men Without Women repeatedly mentions sailors, though it is clear that these sailors are not real. Like the story of meeting M when they were fourteen, these sailors allow the narrator to understand his own feelings. Write an essay about the sailors and what they mean to the narrator.
3. In Henry Jamess The Turn of the Screw, the governesss account is ambiguous and can be interpreted several different ways. The governess could be protecting the children from supernatural forces, or she could be delusional and imagining the whole thing. Using one significant passage from the novella (you must select the passage yourself, but DO NOT USE THE PASSAGE FROM PART 2 OF THIS EXAM), show how the passage can be interpreted two different ways. Your essay should first show one reading of the passage, then the other, and then suggest why James wanted to be ambiguous.
