After watching the video of Robb Willer’s TED Talk, “How to Have Better Political Conversations,” create a post where you respond to ONE of the following prompts:
- Willer is suggesting that in our discussions, we would be wise to appeal to pathos by appealing to readers’/listeners’ morals and values. Do you think what he suggests is a fair use of pathos, or is it manipulative? Why?
- When making an appeal to pathos, it is important to have an accurate understanding of your audience’s morals and values. How accurate is Willer’s definition of the values of each political party’s members? If you identify with either party, how do you respond to his description of your values?
- Willer’s TED Talk was given in 2016. Shortly after, this assignment was given in another class, and in discussion it was discovered/realized that there is always a reason why “buddy cops” come together in the end: they are forced to work together to defeat a common enemy. This class’s discovery gave a sad tone to this video, because it suggests that we will need some sort of major disaster (perhaps a global pandemic?!) to bring us together. Fast-forward to today, we now have a major common enemy, and yet the result seems to be quite the opposite. Do you agree that the Coronavirus pandemic has driven people further apart? If so, why do you think that is?
Conclude your post with an open-ended question for your peers about Willer’s talk (by itself, or, if possible, tied to Beck’s article and/or the topic of tribalism).
