The attached article argues that standard English is necessary as a consistent tool to communicate with others. But what is “standard English” when language is constantly evolving (or devolving)? We all code switch based on our audience; we code switch to some extent when talking with buddies, a grandparent, or even our dog.
Does standardized English still have value in 2021? How? Why? Where? Are we clinging to some formal, antiquated expectation? Just like wearing flip-flops and t-shirts to events that were once considered formal, has language lost the need to follow strict rules?
