Expertise is a capability that helps define the limits of human potential. Those who are said to possess expertise are sometimes thought to have obtained their abilities through hard work and innate differences that have allowed these few to succeed at the levels that they do. Others suggest that there is sufficient evidence to suggest that expertise is a result of deliberate practice over many years and that innate differences are not required for expertise to occur. Your paper will argue for one these positions based on research from journal articles. Your grade will be determined based on how well you address this controversial topic by developing a persuasive, research-based, argument. Your paper will need to be submitted as a Microsoft Word document. the essence of the paper is that it is on the topic of what causes expertise. Some researchers have argued that expertise is a consequence of environmental factors (e.g., deliberate practice) whereas others argue that both environmental factors and innate differences are necessary to explain expertise. Your task is to review the evidence and make a decision as to whether innate differences (i.e., talent) are required to account for expertise. Most papers are about 7 double-spaced pages in length, but I will be grading on the quality of your argument rather than the number of pages that you have. I expect the paper to be in APA format, to have a title and reference page. Make sure that you have a statement in your introduction clearly articulating what position you will be arguing for and then you need to present a double-sided argument (i.e., present evidence from both sides).
