Health education is a role played by health care providers either in their line of duty or planned activity to educate an individual or community about a certain disease so that they take precautions to avoid its negative consequences (Arnold, 2018). Health education can thus be used as an effective tool for the eradication of diseases and health promotion.
Health education plays a role in promoting health as it is tailored for a specific target; thus, it provides information that deals with their problem directly. In providing this education, persons engaged in health education provide information that includes factors that lead to exposure to a certain disease, how to overcome or avoid infections, and actions to take in case of infection. They also offer tools to support behavior change.
The nursing process is a problem-solving process used by nurses to promote wellness. Nurses provide individualistic health education, which is an integral part of the nursing process as it helps them in the assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patients health problems (Stone, 2017). The nurse, through the nursing problem, determines the educational needs of a patient and makes plans to meet those needs by providing health education to the patient.
Families may experience contemporary issues in their lives today. An example of such is when one family member is battling a disability or any chronic illness like hypertension. The family may then expect the needs of their patient to be met as part of efforts to promote their wellness and state of wellbeing. As part of a health education plan, nurses may take steps and undertake activities that help the patients overcome or manage their conditions. This can be achieved by educating the family about the condition and the self-care practices that they ought to adopt in managing their conditions.
Health education is, therefore, a critical tool in helping promote a state of healthiness and wellbeing and helping populations overcome their healthcare issues (Levin & Stillman-Lowe, 2019). It has given individuals and communities information on how to care for themselves and take charge of their health by avoiding infections or in managing already existing conditions.
