We have discussed how the Enlightenment inspired the American revolution against British rule. Many historians would agree that the idea of the United States and its independence from the mother country was experimental. The Declaration of Independence, and the eventual solidification of the Constitution tested the very fabric of its ideals. Even in the present, the ideals of our governmental inception are still struggling for fruition. Nonetheless,  the challenge to imperial rule would continue onto the early nineteenth century, where the British Empire would try to exploit the United States Government’s shortcomings. Their naval superiority, their support of Western Indian Allies, and the United States desire to expand Westward compelled them to declare war on Great Britain. In the War of 1812, British were very close to defeating the American government and imposing its rule. They captured and burned the White House, their naval superiority placed significant limitations on the American’s capacity to trade and defend themselves. For, nearly four years the United States fought the British and its Western Indian allies; with limited success. The Battle of New Orleans (1815) was the final step towards defeating the British and cementing the United States a a legitimate government. It was almost bankrupt, but not broken. It successfully brought one of the worlds strongest army to a standstill for a second time. To be fair, the British did retain its northern Canadian territory, despite some failed efforts by the Americans. Also, the British were involved in the Napoleonic Wars in Europe. This drained significant military resources that could have otherwise been used in the the North America. The conflict increased international respect, it created a greater sense of American nationalism, and increased the desire for western expansion.

Do you agree with the United States decision to declare war on Great Britain in 1812? If so, why? If you do not agree, why?
