In this discussion, we’re going to look at some of the graph transformations you’ve learned about this week. Before we begin, choose ONE of the following basic functions. You will use this function throughout the rest of the discussion. SEE ATTACHMENTS
Many students complain that math is difficult, and yet, for many of the operations we encounter in math, the order in which they occur does not matter—addition, multiplication, etc. Here we noticed that the order in which we perform graph transformations does matter. Can you think of any complicated process in life where the order in which things occur is important? What would happen if you switched the order?
In your original post, answer the following:
- For any given vertical (or horizontal) stretch or shrink, is there a corresponding horizontal (or vertical) stretch or shrink which gives rise to the identical graph transformations? Explain your reasoning.
- Describe a process (step-by-step) in your daily life in which the order of events is important. What would happen if you switched the order?
- Describe a process (step-by-step) in your field of study in which the order of events is important. What would happen if you switched the order?
