For the past few weeks we’ve been discussing the ways in which the world became more interconnected from the 1400s through the mid-1700s. In particular, the world was never the same after people from the so-called Old World (Eurasia and Africa) started coming to the so-called New World (the Americas) in the late 1400s. The Columbian Exchange that began once the Americas were permanently connected to the rest of the world changed the lives of people all around the world.

Your task

You are to write an essay that answers the following question:

To what extent did the Columbian Exchange transform the Americas, Europe, and Africa from around 1500 C.E. to around 1750 C.E.?

This topic is a broad one, so be sure to come up with a thesis that clearly states what you believe were the most important ways that the Columbian Exchange transformed these regions. Much of your paper will focus on the Americas, including the impact on indigenous Americans and on Europeans and Africans who came to the Americas. However, don’t forget to discuss the ways that Europe and Africa were transformed by the Columbian Exchange. Most Africans and Europeans never crossed the Atlantic, but the Columbian Exchange had a huge impact on their lives.

Your evidence

For this essay, you must present and explain evidence from a minimum of five sources. One source will be the textbook. The remaining four sources must be from the videos and articles included in the Sources for Module 1 Essay section.

For general requirements for all Module Essays, see Module Essays.
