There are IV parts to the exam. One is a short answer and asks about an important point made
in chapter 12. The Second is an analysis of the primary source Chinggis Khan’s Letter to
Changchun. The third is an essay question about the Mongol conquest. The fourth is also an
essay question.
I. Short Answer question: 10 points
In at least 300 words: What role do you think chance and contingency play in world
history? Can you think of examples from what we’ve learned this semester?
II. Document Analysis: 30 points
Analyze the following document: It should be about 450 words. Make sure to explain the
historical context, and then do a close text analysis.

III. Essay Question 1: 30 points
In at least 700 words, Discuss the role of the Mongol conquests in integrating the worlds
of Afro-Eurasia.
VI. Essay Question 2: 30 points
Use specific names of people, places, dates, and events. ~650 words
Discuss the different shapes of human societies that existed up to the 15th c. C.E. in the
Premodern World. (Use specific examples to illustrate each form, at least 3 should be mentioned
with details).
