HISTORY 102 Wi 2024: Critical Reading Assignment (25%) A pdf file of the Critical Readings Assignment (an Analytical Essay) is due on mêskanâs at 11:59PM MST on Feb 5, 2024, and it is worth 25% of your final grade. Your essay should be four to five pages in length in text, typed, doublespaced in 12-point font with one-inch margins, page numbers, a title page that contains your name, title of the essay and/or chosen question and title of class/section. Please note pdf file of the three required primary sources listed at the bottom of these instructions are posted below “Announcements” on mêskanâs. Your answer to one of the questions found below must be written in essay form, using third-person narration, with a strong introduction that contains a thesis statement, followed by the development of several supporting points bolstered by specific examples taken from the assigned primary sources and a conclusion. It is important to answer the question in the first paragraph and to put the material in your own words using material from the sources to illustrate your points. While it is necessary to forward your own interpretation and argument, remember to remain focused on the topic or question. A clear writing style in conjunction with solid organizational techniques, a well-developed argument and transitional sentences from paragraph to paragraph should result in a polished and effective essay. Please use the past tense consistently when writing about past events and people, as well as the authors of the primary sources (ie. “He stated, …”). Please proofread your assignment to correct errors prior to submission. Also, please consult the “Comments Page for Essays” on mêskanâs to help edit your essay. Please review the course outline for additional information about late submissions. If you submit your assignment late for any reason, the grade for your paper will be reduced by 10% for every twenty-four period it is late after 11:59PM MST on Feb.5, 2024. Even if your paper is late, it is better to submit it and accept the late penalty than not to submit it. Remember that all required written work for the course must be your own and not done in collaboration with others nor material used in a different class. Any student caught plagiarizing will be turned into the appropriate authorities with the recommendation that the harshest punishment be enforced. Plagiarism includes copying directly from someone’s work and also includes taking ideas that are not your own without giving credit. As noted above the three sources for this essay are found at the bottom of “Announcements” on mêskanás. DO NOT INCLUDE THE INTRODUCTIONS TO EACH PRIMARY SOURCE IN YOUR ESSAY. You must incorporate only material from the assigned primary sources identified in the three footnotes below (that follow the correct format) within your essay to answer one of the two questions below. You must not incorporate any outside materials in your essay nor information from the textbook nor the introductions to the primary sources except for the dates and location of the primary sources. 1 Please use only the Chicago Notes-Bibliography Style of citation (i.e. footnotes or endnotes) for your essay for any quotations or material paraphrased from the sources in the format found below, and please do not submit a “Works Cited” page or a bibliography for this assignment.2 Please use the examples found at the bottom of this page for the format of a citation that must be used for this assignment and you will be severely penalized if you use any other form of citation in your essay.
