Caregiving as Curriculum
Read Chapter 3 pages on 45-64
1. How do you feel about a primary caregiving system? Does it fit your ideas of the best way to care for and educate infants and toddlers in group settings?
2. Do you have any reactions to the idea that children should be encouraged to express their individual needs? Was that a part of your own upbringing? If not, do you think it should have been? In some cultures, expression of individual needs is not encouraged because the focus is on the needs of the group.
3. How do you feel about the following statement: School must not be the model for programs for very young children?
4. What do you remember about the emphasis or de-emphasis on self-help skills in your own upbringing? Do you have any idea about the self-help skills that the adults in your life held? Do you know how these skills might have been related to their values or priorities?
5. How do caregivers build the relationships on which curriculum depends?
6. How can caregivers assess the long term and immediate needs and development of infants and toddlers?
