HOW EI BUILDS LEADERSHIP SKILLS


For this assignment, you are expected to draw meaningful content from at least two recent articles (no more than 5 years old) from scholarly (peer-reviewed) research journals. Note: You may use the assigned readings as part of the paper, but these readings do not count toward the two that are required. Your paper is expected to offer an assessment of the empirical findings of the articles and offer insights into the managerial implications.

Your paper will be graded on the following criteria:

  1. Explain the benefits and risks of high emotional intelligence.

    • Explain how emotional intelligence enhances leadership effectiveness.
    • How might EI work against leaders?
    • How are the risks of high EI best avoided?
  2. Explain how leaders can enhance their own emotional intelligence.

    • Choose two or three specific components of EI and expand on how leaders can develop each of them.
  3. Explain your current mastery of emotional intelligence.

    • Of the various components of EI, identify one that you believe you have mastered.
    • Provide evidence with at least two specific, detailed examples that demonstrate your mastery of this component of EI.
    • Tell your story; avoid broad, generic statements.
  4. Outline a plan to develop your own emotional intelligence.

    • Of the various components of EI, identify three that you need to develop further.
    • Provide a high-level tactical plan, describing the specific actions you would take to develop each of these skills.
    • Tell your story, with the details of the activities that can help you enhance those three components of EI.
  5. Articulate meaning relevant to the main topic, scope, and purpose of the prompt.

    • Examine what you’ve written in response to each grading criterion listed above.
    • Make sure that your paper responds clearly and with sufficient depth to each of the criteria.
    • Distinguished writing will demonstrate a thorough understanding of the main topic, scope, and purpose of the assignment.

Additional Requirements

  • Your paper should be at least 6 pages (double-spaced), but no more than 10 pages in length.
  • A title page and reference page are required (these are not part of the page count).
  • An abstract is not required.
  • While most assignments are expected to be written in the third person (that is, without any reference to yourself), in this assignment you are expected to write about yourself, so writing in the first person is appropriate in this assignment.
