Japanese Manga

2-3 pages, 700-800 words max. In this paper you will select one work of
animation or manga that we have viewed as part of the class and write an essay with two
distinct sections. The introduction (0.5-1 page) should situate the work in modern Japanese
visual cultural history, noting its style, significance, authorship, and historical context. The
formal description (12 page) should detail the visual mode of illustration or animation
techniques used, editing style, and narrative progression (if its is a moving image, sound and
movement may also be included).
*You must include images from the work you choose in the body of the paper (not at the
end), which you can capture via screenshots. It is important to cite where the image came
from (page # or time code [02:37] etc.). Images will not affect the length of the paper,
which is evaluated on word count.
