Chapter 1 of your text offers two starting points for assessing the merits of literature-based films. First, that literature-based films need to be understood as translations of the source material; and, second, that film translations of literature exist in three distinct translation modes: literal, traditional, and radical translations. List the strengths and weaknesses of each translation mode.
Then, select one literature/film pair that we’ve discussed in class. Label it as a particular mode, and explain why it meets the requirements for that particular mode. In other words, what allows us to define the translation as such? Be specific with your answers, and be careful not to just compare/contrast. Stay focused on the specific translation mode. Be careful to answer all parts of this prompt.
