In the paper What Makes Clinical Research Ethical? By Ezekial J Emanuel, MD, PhD, David Wendler PhD, and Christine Grady PhD, I was struck by one of the seven criteria that these researchers on medical ethics should be used to determine if a Clinical Research Project is ethical. Namely number four which states that:

An ethical clinical research project would have a favorable risk benefit  ratio within the context of standard clinical practice and the research protocol, risks must be minimized, potential benefits enhanced, and the potential benefits to individuals and knowledge gained for society must outweigh the risks
I question wether or not the Gain of Function research into bat viruses would pass the above definition of Ethical Clinical Research given the risk to humanity.
