Narrative Thesis Statement
For the narrative essay:
- You will draw from personal experience to tell a story (your topic) with a purpose.
- Purpose is very important in writing, as is audience; therefore, think about who will read this essay and consider the reason someone should read it.
- Your thesis, then, will consist be formed as follows: thesis = topic + purpose
- Example:
- Topic: Automobile accident while texting and driving
- Purpose: To demonstrate the importance of not being distracted while driving
- Thesis: After my automobile accident, I learned to put my cellphone away and not to drive while distracted.

After reading both selections, write at least 250 words to answer ONE of the prompts below, and include the prompt number in your answer. You may quote sparingly from the passage, but remember to include quotation marks around the quoted material; direct quotes should be kept to a minimum to receive full credit for the assignment.
Prompt 1: Organization is important for all essays, particularly the narrative which is based on a series of events. How does Paloma Garcia guide the reader through “First Day of School”? Is the structure of this narrative effective? Why or why not?
