Much like the nursing process, elements that overarch curriculum structure is using the audience, behavior, condition, and degree (ABCD) approach. The ABCD approach can be used for any system or concept (Aithal et al., 2016). With the nursing process, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation (ADPIE). According to Brown (2011), The individual makes mindful choices from an integrated state based on positive goals. When the elements of the nursing process are applied to a colleague or patient. Positive goals are desired with the ABCD approach. The audience will be considered first, second the behavior: what does the instructor want the audience to do. Thirdly, condition as to how the audience will perform and last, measuring the audiences performance with a preset acceptable passing number. Curriculums as a whole benefit with careful thought out planning.

Curriculum development can vary slightly depending on the institution. The belief that curriculum development should include continuity, sequence, and integration has been utilized for many years (Billings & Halstead, 2019). The elements included in the overarching curriculum structure include identifying organizing frameworks and establishing outcomes and competencies (Billings & Halstead, 2019).
Organizing frameworks is a blueprint of what knowledge is valued in nursing currently and what knowledge should be taught in the program while planning out how that may look (Billings & Halstead, 2019). This contributes to the curriculum as a whole as it is ever-changing and helps keep programs up to date with consideration of what concepts and or content is needed with the current healthcare setting. End-of-program outcomes and competencies and level competencies are checkpoints for students to show they are understanding and learning the goals of the course/program throughout and upon completion (Billings & Halstead, 2019). These are necessary to ensure the curriculum is effective and that students meet the goals set for them. Outcomes are long-term, while competencies are short-term assessments (Billings & Halstead, 2019).
