Students engagement in academic-related learning activities is one of the important determinants of students success. Students who have frequent interaction with faculty are most satisfied with their learning experience

and show greater learning outcomes . Students are more likely to be able

to cope with the stresses of academic life if they are engaged in academic support systems. Developing appropriate curriculum & evaluation affects how students perceive their education & perform in their courses. Competent nurses, can only be created by students feeling motivated & fully engaged in their own learning. Good curriculum design helps students reach their goals, provide knowledge, build confidence in their skills, & allows them to deliver safe care to the patients. (Billings & Halstead, 2019). NLN competency requires educators to ensure that the curriculum not only reflects institutional mission & philosophy but also base their design on learners needs & educational goals. Educators should also revise curriculum based on EBP & continuous quality improvement needs. Therefore, curriculum development directly affects what students learn & how well they are prepared to face the challenges as new nurses. (Halstead, J. A. 2019).

Teaching strategy that I would use to teach content is problem solving in-group discussions or workshops. Evidence suggests that students who interact with peers on a regular basis & discuss problems, scenarios & case studies, develop critical thinking skills. Highly involved students are more likely to learn academically and develop personally especially those who engage in discussions, arguments, & brain storming with other students. Learning with peers, or collaborative learning, enhances student success by facilitating incentives to learn, shared comprehension of material, and support from peers. Engagement in intellectual challenge among peers motivates students to have positive & healthy competition. Group learning that involves problem solving helps them collaborate with each other feeling supported & connected. (Putri & Sumartini, 2021)

The NLN competencies for nurse educators must ensure that the needs of nursing students are met when creating curriculum and teaching,

I chose to focus on competency IV: – Participate in curriculum design and evaluation of the program outcomes.

Professional development of students has become the primary responsibility of nurse educators; the role becomes intricate and multidimensional. Firstly, nurse educators are committed to lifelong learning. Secondly, they occupy the position to influence and enhance their students’ career and educational paths. (Billings & Halstead)

Nurse educators are committed to balancing and integrating research with clinical expertise to accomplish the best outcomes and improve learners’ engagement.

This competency mirrors the NLN’s core values on utilizing EBP as a guide to design nursing curricula that will help students succeed throughout their program and ultimately pass their NCLEX exam at the end of their course. (National League for Nursing, 2021).

The nurse educator’s competencies were defined and described in 2005 to demonstrate how academic nurse educators will function in their full capacity to participate in curriculum design and evaluation of the program outcomes,

Educators need to demonstrate the skills and abilities to design and implement the curriculum that will be context-based, with sound contemporary educational models, principles, and best evidence-based practice reflecting current trends in the healthcare environment.

Implement a relevant course based on innovative teaching and learning strategies to enable student-centered learning and improved learning outcomes.

Integrate evidence-based teaching and learning processes to help learners interpret and apply evidence in their clinical learning experiences.

Maintain a safe environment conducive to learning in theoretical, clinical simulation, and practice settings.

Create an evaluation method for the teaching and learning experiences and using the results to monitor learner performance and desired outcomes of courses.

The National League for Nursing website provided different types of curriculum design that clearly articulate the didactic content incorporated into the curriculum to enhance student’s knowledge and improve their achievement.

Development and use of technology have made significant changes in education from the beginning of this century, causing a breakthrough in education and significant transformations in teaching approaches, strategies, and methods. (Billings & Halstead, 2020)

Teaching strategies in modern blended learning environments are student-oriented: The learning environment and the teaching process are adjusted to students’ needs.

The strategy I would love to use will depend on the need of the learner and the stage of their education.

One of the teaching strategies that can apply to all learning styles is a simulation; it is an interactive forum for students to engage in their learning and work together to learn and solve problems as if they are in the real-world scenario. (Sharma, 2017).

Simulations involve several learning styles; students can use their hands as they focus on the problem their solving and work through different situations; it also encourages interprofessional engagement, discussion amongst classmates, and reading through the charts, case-study, and paperwork to help solve the simulated problem. (Sharma, 2017).

This teaching strategy helps the educator implement the course structure to allow for maximum learner achievement. However, I will also encourage pre-class assignments concept at the beginning of each class. It will help the students prepare; they would have researched and equipped themselves for the class before teaching and using any concept in the class. This method prepares students ahead by researching and studying the topic needed to be taught in the class and will enhance their engagement and participation.
