One of the main jobs of historians is to interpret the past by reviewing primary documents and scholarly secondary sources and then creating an analysis of this research.  Please read Chapters 27-28 in your textbook, and click on three links below to access sources on the Cold War that will help you with your journal assignment.

After reading your textbook and reviewing the assigned materials, submit an analysis of the Cold War.  You should consider the following questions:

  1. Do you believe American fears of the Soviet Union/Communism were justified during the Cold War?
  2. Were fears of Communists within the government justified?
  3. Why would the government put out PSAs (such as “Duck and Cover”) that offer little in the way of real help?
  4. Do you see any lingering Cold War fears in modern America?

This assignment should be at least 300 words and contain your reactions or questions about some specific issue within the historical narrative that you find compelling.

This assignment should contain your reactions or questions about some specific issue within the historical narrative that you find compelling. For full credit, your journal entry must not simply sum up the reading or repeat points made there. Rather, I am looking for you to create your own interpretation, explain the emotional content of the piece, and/or discuss some original insight. Include citations as needed.
