Choose one of these two topics, and without consulting any websites or other sources, write an essay.
1. Explore three aspects of darkness or suffering (not both) shown in Sonnys Blues. First, read the story again, highlighting and making note of details, passages, and quotes that may be useful. In your prewriting, identify five or six aspects of suffering or darkness in the story, and brainstorm some details for each one. Narrow your list down to the three strongest aspects. You will discuss one in each of your three body paragraphs (name the aspect in the topic sentence). Develop your discussion using details (quotes) from the story and your commentary that explains the element (darkness or suffering) shown in those quotes. Your discussion could explain things like why that aspect of suffering or darkness is a problem to characters in the story, how characters deal with it, and if theres a better way to deal with it. Do not write a general plot summary.
2. Identify and explain the three most important aspects of revelation in OConnors story Revelation. First, read the story again, highlighting and making note of details, passages, and quotes that may be useful. In what way do revelations come in the story? What is revealed? What is the importance of what is revealed? How does the character respond? What does any of this show about human nature? In your prewriting, identify five or six aspects of revelation n the story and brainstorm some details for each one. Narrow your list down to the three strongest aspects. You will discuss one in each of your three body paragraphs (name the aspect in the topic sentence). Develop your discussion using details (quotes) from the story and your commentary that explains the aspect of revelation shown in those quotes. Do not write a general plot summary.

Plan carefully and write your draft thoughtfully. When you finish drafting, check your essay using this assignment sheet. Then polish your essay by revising as needed and proofreading before you submit the finished and polished essay (worth up to 100 points) to Blackboard by 9 pm Monday, October 18.
Working with Quotes:
Set up each quote using at least a signal phrase to give context. If you are quoting a character who is talking or thinking, the signal phrase should indicate who the character is and what they are talking about.
If your signal phrase ends in says, put a comma after says Bill says, people dont think very much (Brown 899).

You could also introduce a quote with a complete sentence followed by a colon.
Sonnys brother begins to understand him: My trouble made his real (Baldwin 176).
Parenthetical Citations:
The citation comes at the end of the sentence that contains a quote, and the period goes after the
citation. Dont put a comma or a period before the citation.
Cite the first quote using the authors last name and the page number in parentheses. After the
first quote, include just the page number in parentheses.
Works Cited Entry:
On a new page after your concluding paragraph, include a Works Cited page with a double- spaced MLA-style (hanging indent) works cited entry for the story you are writing about. Your entry should look like one of these:

The last sentence of the introduction is a strong, clear thesis statement that indicates the three important aspects of the topic [remember that topics are darkness or suffering for Sonnys Blues, or revelation for Revelation] discussed in the essay
Strong, clear topic sentence at the start of each body paragraph that names an important aspect of your topic (see point immediately above), in the same order listed in the thesis
Thorough development in each body paragraph that includes a minimum of two strong, relevant direct quotations from the story and your commentary that explains the darkness, suffering, or revelation shown in those quotations
