EXAMPLE of how it has to be does not have to be long
Environmental justice refers to the equitable distribution of environmental risks and benefits so no group is disadvantaged. Marginalized groups such as racial minorities and socioeconomically disadvantaged are prone to high exposure to adverse environmental consequences. The studies into environmental justice are closely associated with environmental racism, which began in 1982 when people began to realize that neighborhoods that were associated with racial and ethnic minorities and low-income earners were prone to more pollution compared to the others (Mohai et al., 2009). Thus, environmental justice takes the form of an interdisciplinary study that seeks to delve into the environment and how it is affected by social, economic, and political factors.
2) The Grumman Plume is an environmental justice issue. The people in the Bethpage area have been exposed to disproportionate health risks from the chemicals that leached into their drinking water. The residents report that at least each family in the area has a member who has been diagnosed with cancer. Trichloroethylene (TCE) was among the chemicals the company released; it has been determined that it is carcinogenic, which can be attributed to the high cancer incidences among residents (Basinger, 2021). The laxity of the company in taking action in 1987 can be attributed to the low-income status of the Bethpage residents. Moreover, the inadequate regulatory oversight and remediation efforts exemplify the injustice the residents suffered for decades. Despite the company being aware of the leakages, they covered the reality from the public. Even the county health department played a role in facilitating the suffering as the county health commissioner endorsed the misinformation that the water was safe for the people to drink. The systemic failures that culminated in decades of suffering and abandonment exemplify the interdisciplinary nature of the environmental issue that faced the residents of Bethpage.
3) The Grumman Plume is a social problem. The experiences that people have in response to an environmental phenomenon are a factor of who they are, where they are, and what they do (Treviño, 2022, p.383). In the Bethpage area of Nassau County of New York, the people continue suffering from neglect and coverup by the company and government agencies. Some social issues include a break in public trust, poor health, and poverty. The vibrant region can no longer maintain productivity due to health complications.
4) Environmental injustices should be critically addressed to create a deterrent to other entities. First, community education and awareness can help people understand the dangers they face and how to address them. The power of large numbers can help create national and international attention, thereby increasing the chances of positive change. Secondly, boycotting entities that do not support sustainable practices can provide effective social action. Most companies and persons would rather observe sustainable practices than lose support from the community. Thus, the strategy can help in promoting long-term change.
