Problem space: It is not known how adult children describe how they were influenced academically and socially by the incarceration of their parents.

Problem statement: It is not unknown that parental incarceration has a significant influence on children socially and academically.

Research questions: R1: How do adult children describe how they were influenced academically by the incarceration of their parents?

RQ2: How do adult children describe how they were influenced socially by the incarceration of their parents?

Phenomenon: The social and academic influence on children whose parents are incarcerated.

Theoretical foundation: Resilience theory and Attachment theory (Bowlby)

Method & design: Since the aim of the study is to explore consequences that arise from parental incarceration to young children, phenomenological research design was employed. Phenomenological design is a qualitative research protocol that takes the form of causal-comparative design. Gill (2020) states that phenomenology is a term used to refer to the study of phenomena, which is anything that appears to an individual in their conscious experience. Therefore, phenomenological studies seek to study an individual’s experience of the issue under investigation. For this study, the use of a phenomenological research design was essential because it seeks to explore and understand individual experiences on the issue of parental incarceration. Using this approach, the research will obtain insights from participants regarding their experiences of parental incarceration and how it affected them across different domains in life including academically and socially.

Data sources: in depth interviews, focus groups, and literature review of peer review journal articles

Purpose statement: The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study is to explore how parental incarceration impact young children academically and socially.
