After reading all of the material I have learned so much about how I can better understand children with autism and how I can use this information in my future career. The article “What is Neurodiversity” by Caroline Miller had so many good points and information about how neurodiversity should not be seen as something that needs to be fixed. This article really allowed me to understand that every child works differently and it might take some work, but it is so important to try and figure out how to best meet the needs of a child that is neurodivergent. I would always do my best to reassure that these differences to not make a child any less capable and that it is never something to feel bad about, it just means that one learns differently. The double empathy problem was also very informative and did a really great job at showing how it feels for one on both sides of the spectrum. I will use this information to help me in the future because I understand that everyone communicates differently and a child may not be able to communicate the way that I do, but is still my responsibility to do my best to understand how they communicate so I can work with the child efficiently and meet their needs.
