1. The experiences and difficulties faced by foreign students who have just relocated to the United States to attend college are the phenomenon that has been recognized in the given scenario. The goal of this phenomenon is to comprehend these students’ transitional time and the challenges they face as they adjust to studying in a foreign country. In-depth interviews and other qualitative research techniques are ideal for examining this issue. Researchers can obtain rich and extensive information about the experiences and difficulties faced by international students throughout their transition period by conducting in-depth interviews (Arafeh, 2020; Krsmanovic, 2020, pp 959). Through these interviews, researchers can gain a comprehensive knowledge of the participants’ journey by delving into their subjective experiences, feelings, ideas, and reflections.

Certain things need to be considered when doing qualitative research on this phenomenon. To fully represent the wide diversity of experiences and viewpoints among international students, a varied sample of participants must be chosen (Krsmanovic, 2021, pp 2). This diversity may encompass elements like gender, nationality, cultural background, and academic discipline. It makes it possible to have a thorough grasp of the difficulties encountered by various groups of international students. In qualitative research, ethical considerations are also quite important. Informed consent from participants, privacy, and participant information confidentiality are all requirements that researchers must uphold (Dos Santos, 2019, pp 4). It is possible to improve the quality of data collection and participant involvement by addressing any power dynamics or language difficulties.

The existence of biases in the research is another factor to consider. It is imperative for qualitative researchers to acknowledge and address any preconceived notions or preconceptions they may have. This can be accomplished by being reflective, asking colleagues or other researchers for advice, and using methods like member checking to make sure the findings are legitimate and accurate (Dos Santos, 2019, pp 5; Krsmanovic, 2020, pp 959). The experiences and difficulties encountered by international students as they adjust to studying in the United States constitute the research phenomenon in this scenario. In-depth interviews to gain better understanding of experiences is used with the qualitative method. Kyngäs (2020, p.3) explains when a problem is being approached from a different angle, when there is limited existing comprehension of a complicated phenomenon (which cannot be addressed by collecting physical measures), or when present information is dispersed, qualitative research methodologies are frequently used.

Regarding the aforementioned scenario, the identified phenomenon is understanding the experiences and struggles by international students while attending college in the United States. Often times those challenges could include, but not limited to, financial strains, homesickness, cultural and social disparities, loneliness, and possible discrimination.

Nassaji (2020, p. 427) explains that rather than explaining and modifying variables, qualitative research aims to comprehend and investigate. It is interpretative analysis and contextualized, focusing more on the stages of development or processes than the ultimate outcome or product of the study (Nassaji, 2020, p. 427). The scenario would be explored through surveys and interviews attempting to gain insight into how they felt and their experiences, positive or negative.

An additional consideration for the specified phenomenon would involve ethnographic research. To gain a closer, empathetic perspective to the subject, ethnographers document personal observations while engaging in their subjects’ daily activities (Risku, 2022, p. 324). Adapting to the subjects’ environment provides a first hand and natural experience for the researcher but can be time consuming and challenging for analyzing data.
