Among the reasons listed in the Declaration of Independence to justify the American colonies independence from the British Empire, the Continental Congress included King Georges efforts to obstruct immigration. Immigration is also an important issue in modern American politics. However, a large part of the public discussion of immigration now seems concerned with imposing limits on peoples ability to settle in America. I am curious how and why Americans views of immigration changed over time, from a natural and important part of the process of building their country to something ominous and threatening.
