Purpose:
Children’s literature is meant to be used by and with children. This unit will give you practice matching materials with curricular goals.

- Use a web planning tool to reveal the relationship between ideas and concepts found in books.
- Identify a goal.
- Keep the goal/topic broad enough to be able to incorporate language arts and the content area you have designed.
- Identify at least 10 titles, from 3 different genres (which will be used in the annotated bibliography AND the 3 learning outcomes)
- The texts should represent a range of reading levels so that all students in a grade level class can benefit from reading these books and contributing to the class conversations
- Identify 3 learning outcomes for the unit
- In addition to the outcomes, designate which books you would use for read-aloud to the class, small group reading, individual reading.

- List 2 books that support the goal that can be read aloud
- Small Group
- List 4 books that support the goal that can be read in small groups. Must be from 2 different genres
- Individual Reading
- List 4 books that support the goal that can be independent reads. Must be from 2 different genres
- Read aloud
- Design at least 2 activities that fit the content area and address either writing, reading or oral language ELA standards.
- Design 1 discussion point that fits the content area.
- In addition to the outcomes, designate which books you would use for read-aloud to the class, small group reading, individual reading.
- Identify a goal.
- Provide an annotated bibliography (which includes a citation and summary/rationale) for these books and use MLA style citations.
- The annotated bibliography will include at least 10 titles, from at least 3 different genres (from the books you used above)
Some examples of literacy activities:
- Designate how you might use the texts as a resource to an individual or small group inquiry project
- How might you use the texts as a literature discussion group
- Have students write a personal narrative after listening to/reading the texts
- Have students write a Reader’s Theater script based on texts
