The Public Policy Process of Public Administration

Every day, knowingly or unknowingly, citizens are affected by public policies. Take vehicle owners and operators for example The Truth in Lending Act is a mandate that lenders provide accurate information to those purchasing a vehicle with credit. The vehicle itself is equipped with safety and environmental consideration measures (i.e. seat belts, air bags, padded dash, mechanisms to reduce emissions) required by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. Additionally, State policy includes mandates that drivers become licensed to operate the vehicle and possess insurance on both the driver and the vehicle itself. Drivers must also be well versed in state and local traffic regulations. Violations of those traffic regulations could result in drivers being ticketed, fined, or worse by law enforcement. And these are only a few of the ways in which drivers come into contact with public policies on a daily basis.

Policies can be made at the federal, state, and local levels.
