I need help writing a proposal for a research paper. Specific information required to be addressed in the proposal is as follows:
Proposal Requirements
Description of your area
Location of the structure chosen for observation
Identification of the end of the structure (apartments, Home Depot, etc.)
Current progress of construction of the project
Reason for choosing this structure.
My Answers to proposal requirements are as follows:
Proposal Requirements
The proposal for this requirement includes a letter containing the following:
Description of your area
The area I will be writing about is located in a residential area of a small rural community located in Illinois. The community population is approximately 1,000 people. The community does not have many large buildings. New construction is very rare and hard to find in this area. The majority of construction is residential remodel construction.
Location of the structure chosen for observation
The location of the structure is 1245 Young St. Nauvoo, IL 62354
Identification of the end of the structure (apartments, Home Depot, etc.)
At completion of construction the structure will be a single-family residential home
Current progress of construction of the project
The home has already been under construction for approximately 1year. The construction is being completed by the homeowner who is estimated to be 70-80yrs old. Demolition of the interior has already been completed and the home is now in the rebuilding phase. The project is less the 50% completed.
Reason for choosing this structure.
I chose this location because there are not many choices in my area. New construction is almost unheard of in my area however there are frequently residential remodel construction projects, so this was an obvious choice. Also, my area consists primarily of residential structures and does not have any large structures over 3-levels. My area also does not have many large commercial structures, so I wanted to focus on the residential type structures. The structure I chose to observe was formerly a 1-story residential home however after the construction is completed the structure will be converted into a 2-story residential home. This structure is unique because a man who is approx. 70-80yrs old bought the home and plans to do all of the construction work himself. The man has removed the entire exterior wall on the east side of the home and extended the east wall 2ft outward. The man has also already cut a hole into the roof of the home and added the 2nd story to the home. One item that visually stands out the most about this structure is that the man has installed a door horizontally on the second floor to be used as a window. I am interested in this structure because I am curious to see if the applicable building codes are actually being followed or not. Because this area is so small it does not have a good system to enforce building codes therefor making it easier to skip compliance undetected.
The guidelines for the final research paper are as follows:
Each student will select a building under construction in their district or a nearby town/city. The student will observe the construction as it progresses through the entirety of the semester. The student will observe work in progress, record observations, and where necessary, follow up with analysis of what you have seen. A series of regular visits to your site is required. The student may attempt to gain access to the site with the permission of the construction manager, but this is not required. If access to the site is granted, all safety requirements (steel toe boots, hardhats, safety glasses, etc.) will be required. Visits will be made during the times specified by the construction manager as well.
The site shall be documented with digital photography and the upkeep of a diary which will chronicle each visit. Documentation can be done in the form of sketches, photography, writing, interviews, and other means of observations. Each entry in the diary shall include, at a minimum, the following:
Date and time of visit
Weather conditions
What type of work is underway?
Are there any materials being stored, delivered, or used on site?
Are there any temporary supports being used on the site?
What is the condition of the housekeeping on site?
Proposal Requirements
The proposal for this requirement includes a letter containing the following:
Description of your area
Location of the structure chosen for observation
Identification of the end of the structure (apartments, Home Depot, etc.)
Current progress of construction of the project
Reason for choosing this structure.
Final Submittal Requirements
Upon completion of the project, a final report will be submitted which will include:
A summary write-up identifying the construction type, building use, fire prevention systems, and other observations noted throughout the observation process (i.e. a summary of your field notes). Note that this should include all details of the building (general construction type, faade construction, roof construction, HVAC and fire protection systems, etc.)
Typed chronology of field notes
Scanned images of any field sketches made
Appendix including all digital photographs with references made in general write-ups and typed field notes.
Paper should include a title page including title of construction site, course number, and author of the paper.
Following the title page, a 2-3 page summary of the construction site, including what phase of construction the building was in and the activities that took place throughout your visits. Did you see anything that may pose specific hazards to firefighters (either while under construction or after building completion)?? Be sure to include references to any attached photos as necessary.
For each field visit, one of the following pages needs to be placed in the report. Please only have one visit per sheet.
An appendix should be included with any field sketches, photographs (do not insert 5,000 photos. Only insert them if they enhance the paper and remember it must be small enough to submit via Safe Assignment). You should have at least photos of all sides of the building and any items spoken of in detail in the summary section.
