The question they had to answer.(Compare and contrast the idea of extrinsic and intrinsic rewards with Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory of motivation.  Does the idea of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards agree in principle with Herzberg, or not?   How effectively have you seen intrinsic and extrinsic rewards used in the workplace?)

Intrinsic incentives are internal in nature and reflect a person’s interests, values, and goals. An intangible intrinsic reward is the sensation of accomplishment you get from mastering a new skill, completing a difficult endeavor, or working on a project that has personal value or purpose. On a blue background, five gold stars with a hand pointing to and touching the fifth star. Extrinsic reward, on the other hand, is something that comes from outside of yourself, such as a teacher or a boss at work. Extrinsic incentives can be monetary (a bonus, incentive, or commission) or non-monetary (a gift) (praise, a training badge, a development opportunity, or a coveted project assignment). A promotion, for example, would very certainly contain components of both. Include a pay boost as well as a new title. Intangibles such as the opportunity to work remotely or an offer to join in a mentoring program are examples of extrinsic benefits. Yes, the idea of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards agrees in principle with Herzberg. Everybody is motivated by something, whether their motivated to be lazy or their motivated to be active. People who are lazy find comfort in doing nothing and have trained their body and mindset to accept that. People who are active and want to pursue their greatest potential in life are motivated by just that. I have seen intrinsic and extrinsic rewards used in the workplace numerous times. As for extrinsic rewards, I have seen co-workers get excited about the bonuses that were issued for a one time only event. I have a co-worker who is getting a degree in real estate and he’s still a cop. So, he gets excited when talking about it and making better moves for his family.
