Essay Question: In chapter 5,Going Abroad, and how to read literature literature,David Damrosch write the following with regard to Conrads heart of darkness:…Readers have been sharply divided in their interpretation of what we find out as we accompany Marlow up river. do we see Africa, or do we see Marlows hallucination of a dark night of the soul, projected outward? Do we see the essential corruption of European imperialism, or more ambivalently the feelings of an imperialism gone wrong? Or, are we shown a permit to visit them so unrestrained and redeemable that Conrad reinforces the racist faces of imperialism even as he criticizes it? Choose one of these perspectives of the novella and argue for this interpretation using evidence from the text.
