Essay Question: In An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrads Heart of Darkness, Achebe argues with regard to Conrads novella: Although [Conrad] is writing good sentences, hes also writing about a people and their life. And he says that these people [the Africans] are rudimentary soulsthe Africans are the rudimentaries, and on top are the good whites. Now, I dont accept that as a basis for anything Africa [acts] as setting and backdrop which eliminates the African as a human factor. Africa [is] a metaphysical battlefield devoid of all recognizable humanity, which the wandering European enters at his peril. How does Achebes contrasting portrayal of Africa in Things Fall Apart work to refute this dehumanization of African people/African culture?
