What is the most favorite film you have ever viewed? Chances are you have seen it over and over again, which brings with it a deep knowledge of the film’s plot, characters, dialogue, settings, music, action, etc.
For this journal assignment, watch the film again carefully, and look for the elements of film artistry discussed in the textbook and in the lectures for this chapter. Pay attention to cuts, shots, camera angles, etc. Then answer these questions:
Your film has been named in the title of your journal thread. For this prompt, name the director, production company, year the film was released, and if it won any particular awards (just name one or two).
- Discuss three specific Director’s choices that made this film special. This may be something small and specific, like the way lighting created mood, or it may be related to the overall style of the film. Try to be as specific as possible.
- Does the plot of your favorite film follow any of the archetypal patterns mentioned in Chapter 8: Drama? Is there more than one, or a combination of patterns?
- Give your personal evaluation of the film. Considering the principles of evaluative criticism from Chapter 3 of the text, what do you think are the merits of this film? Would you recommend it to others? Why or Why not?
