Chapter 3 OverviewChapter 3 addresses the skills approach which is a leader centered perspective on leadership. In this chapter our discussion of skills approach is divided into two parts. We look at Katz three basic administrative skills: technical, human, and conceptual. And, then we also look at Munford and his colleagues on new skills-based model, various labels of an organization; i.e., top management, middle management, and supervisory management. On Figure 3.2, three components of the skill model are: individual attributes, competencies, and leader outcomes. The individual attributes that we look at: general cognitive ability, crystallized cognitive ability, motivation and personality. We also look at the leadership aspect as effective problem solving and performance. The chapter goes on to share with us create experiences and environmental influences as noted in Figure 3.3 skills model of leadership . The chapter also tells us how skills approach works. And again it refers back to Munford and Katz areas of expertise. The chapter ends with the strengths, criticism, and application of each of these approaches.
