As counselors, working clients can affect your health and well-being. It is important to understand the signs of burnout and being personally affected by the trauma you are treating.

Create a 700- to 1,050-word personal care plan, and ensure you:

  • Describe a situation in which you may experience counselor burnout. What factors might contribute to a burnout?
  • Explain how burnout differs from compassion fatigue. How would you work through burnout or compassion fatigue as a counselor?
  • Define vicarious traumatization. Describe some situations that may make you vulnerable to vicarious traumatization. How will you overcome this as a counselor?

Identify what you will do if you are triggered by the trauma your client has reported. What steps will you take?
