Short answer

Your short paper should be a critical analysis of Antigone. If you’re not sure what to write about, here are some options (use one option, not several):

1-Explain the disagreement between Antigone and Creon (what are they arguing about, exactly?), and comment on the strengths and weaknesses of each character’s position (does one character have a superior understanding of justice – for instance, about whether political loyalty should take precedence over family loyalty, or vice versa)?

2-Evaluate the following statement by Martha Nussbaum: “Antigone, like Creon, has engaged in a ruthless simplification of the world which effectively eliminates competing obligations. Like Creon, she can be blamed for a refusal of vision… But… we admire Antigone, nonetheless, in a way we do not admire Creon.” Do you agree with Nussbaum’s aassessment? Why or why not? (You don’t need to read Nussbaum’s essay to answer  this question.)

3-How does Antigone justify her rebellion against political authority? Is that rebellion justified? Why or why not?)
Note: use the citation, when referencing specific passages from the reading you should use the citation the system explained in my lectures (give a line number in parenthesis in the body of the text). The line numbers that you cite from the play should be directly relevant to whatever point you are making.
