A central theme that has emerged in this course is the manner in which the constitution of ourselves,
particularly many elements which belong to what we tend to categorize as our interiority — our
thoughts, orientations, emotions, behaviors, etc. — cannot be separated from the outside, whether
this outside encompasses other people, specific processes, etc.
Choose one of the following themes: 1) socialization, 2) social contexts/situations, 3) social structures, 4)
groups/group-processes.
Explore how the characteristics of an individual whether an individuals schemes of perception, values,
orientations, emotions, behavior, etc. is either affected or molded by the theme that you have chosen
(socialization, social contexts/situations, social structures, groups/group processes).
In your paper, briefly address what the literature that we have read in class states about the theme that
you chose (socialization, social contexts/situations, social structures, groups/group processes) e.g. how
its defined, theorized, or empirically studied.
Next, you must find at least two (a maximum of four) additional written academic works about the
theme you have chosen they may be articles/books/ etc. — that we have not read in this class.
Explain how these works add to the theoretical or empirical themes we have explored in class.
In summary:
1) Choose one out of the four topics listed in the prompt to write about.
2) Briefly describe the topic you chose. You do this by addressing what the readings we read in class
have to say about this topic. All the topics come from themes that we have discussed throughout the
weeks.
3) Find at least two additional academic sources (whether academic articles, books, etc.) that are related
to the theme you chose and address their content. Keep in mind that your additional sources must be
academic publications. They cannot be random news articles, blogs, etc.
