- The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis says that our language shapes our reality. Please reflect on ONE of the following questions:
- There are indigenous languages in North and South America that lack possessive and perosnal pronouns (which means th elanguage does not have words for “I”, “you”, “mine” or “yours”). Based on the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, what does that tell us about the respective culture in which the language is spoken?
- If you speak more than one language, have you ever come across words that are difficult to translate into another language? Have yo uencountered words that seem to be “missing” in another language? What does that say about the two cultures in which the languages are spoken?
- In the English language, we have many more negative words to describe women than men, and many names for professions/jobs do not have a feminine form of the word at all. Based on the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, what does that say about how English-speaking people think about women?
