The U.S. teen birthrate is the highest in the developed world.  There are no federal laws in the U.S. that require sexual health education in schools like, for example, in France and Australia that have much lower rates of teen pregnancy.  Should sex education be mandatory in the U.S. public school system? Why or why not? In what grade should sex education start? Why?

Purpose: A goal of our course is to analyze the complexity of social issues . This week, education and the economy were explored. In order to understand more about education (which in turn affects many other systems, such as the economy, healthcare, etc.), you will participate on a discussion board regarding sex education.

After completing this assignment, you should be able to create a thorough dialogue that supports your belief about whether sex education should be mandatory in the US public school system. You should be able to evaluate your opinion by utilizing the text and other sources and eloquently discuss the why and why not, with reasoning. Then, you should be able to examine at what grade you feel it is appropriate for sex education to start, using the research as a guide, and provide thorough reasoning.

Task: Your task is to: (1) Read Chapter 8 and 9 of our text (2) Create an initial post of 250 words or more before Friday at 11:59 PM that answers the questions posed above. You must use scholarly sources to support your claim and our textbook and provide a works cited.    (3) Connect your ideas to the text to support your post by including important vocab. Remember, the text and research will not give you an exact answer – you have to determine what you think is best and use your reasoning.

Criteria: Your assignment will be graded on the following criteria, 4 point for each criteria: (1) Did the initial post meet the length requirements? (2) Were the questions answered accurately in the initial post? (3) Were there references that were utilized and cited? (4) Did the responses meet length requirements? (5) Did the responses address the original post by reflecting on it and giving a why or why not regarding similarities and differences?
