The United States underwent dramatic transformations during the decades after the Civil War. Choose the transformation or trend that most interests you (the rise of segregation, urbanization, industrialization, etc.) and compare what American magazines at the time said compared to our textbook.Length: 2 double spaced pages with 1 margins and a standard 12-point typeface
Step 1: Choose a topic from textbook chapters 1-5 that you think is interesting. You may have an easier time in the following steps if you choose a specific event that signifies your topic (like the Homestead Strike instead of labor strife).
Step 2: Using CIs subscription to the American Periodicals Series database, find and read two articles that address your topic from Step 1. Be sure to record complete and correct bibliographic information for all articles used. (Start at the library’s list of databases Links to an external site.and find the link to American Periodicals Series 1740-1940.)
Step 3: What do your articles tell you about your topic? How does this compare to what the textbook told you? If it helps, you can think of this as comparing and contrasting how the textbook covered your topic and how your magazine articles from when the events happened cover your topic.
Step 4: Include a bibliography (this does not count towards your page count) listing your magazine articles in Chicago Manual of Style format. Don’t worry if your citations aren’t formatted perfectly — the goal is to make an honest effort.
The purpose of this assignment is to explore the American Periodicals Series database, and to take stock of the dramatic transformations that reshaped the United States from roughly 1870-1900. You are welcome to use the lecture material as well as the textbook to give you ideas for Step 1, but I havent coordinated my lectures very well with the textbook so far.
