An event I have attended that I remember was the NFL draft that was held in Nashville in 2019. One way that the NFL draft was similar a theatrical performance is when they call a player’s name. The players already know who’s going to draft them a couple minutes before their name is called and have already celebrated with their families. They still put on an act for the fans like they just learned what team they got drafted by and it got the fans riled up. Theatrical arts is defined as a dramatic presentation, and I feel like the players give the audience/fans that. Its different from a theatrical performance because in the interview by Shah Mbe (2016) most of the experts referred to the actors as story tellers. In this case, the actors or players weren’t really telling a story. Aesthetic Distance plays a part in how you saw the stage at the NFL draft. If you were too close to the stage, you wouldn’t be able to take in the enormous set that would change colors based on the team that was making the selection. If you were too far you wouldn’t be able to see the players take the stage. There were also elements of Ceremony and ritual theatre before the draft began. There were a couple performances of people wearing costumes and doing acrobats on stage. One of the most important parts of the NFL draft was the actor-audience encounter. Anytime the commissioner Rodger Goodell would take the stage and speak, it was tradition to boo him. Also, fans would let the players know if they were happy with the selection or disappointed, and sometimes the players would go celebrate with the fans. In the article Theatre, performance and Society, Gilles Ste-Croix explained the role that spectacles has in performing arts. He said that people expect and accept spectacles from their performances (Mbe 2016). The NFL draft was also a spectacle in Nashville. It used to be a very small event held in auditoriums with not many people attending. In 2019, over 600,000 people attended the NFL draft over a span of 3 days. They reserved Broadway and put the stage in the middle of downtown Nashville. Hundreds of thousands of people flooding the streets of downtown is something you probably won’t see again. This event reflects today’s society because we’re always trying to top what we did yesterday. People expect spectacles for the most popular events and nothing less.
