There are many reasons to study intercultural communication, including the six imperatives discussed in Chapter 1:

  1. the peace imperative,
  2. the economic imperative that includes both the global economy and the workplace,
  3. the technological imperative which houses technology and human communication,
  4. the demographic imperative that includes the changing US demographics and the changing immigration patterns,
  5. the self-awareness imperative,
  6. and the ethical imperative, including judgments and values.

1.) What two imperatives stand out the most to you and why? Explain why these imperatives can help lead you to an increased self-understanding of culture and your cultural surroundings.

2.) Also, besides these six imperatives, is there anything else that is missing that you think is vital to studying and understanding intercultural communication? Please integrate the textbook into your response, citing specific page numbers from the text, as well as the supplementary reading from this week. Please use APA format for all intext citations.

After reading, “Selling Off Apache Holy Land” by Millet, 2015 (see: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/29/opinion/selling-off-apache-holy-land.html?_r=0) you will recall that most Native Americans don’t view the earth as real estate. They have a relationship with the natural world. In this opinion piece by Millet (2015), we learn about some dramatic differences between the values and perceptions between two worlds. Both sides perceive that they are right.

3) What are some of the perceptual differences in values?

4) Is this essay about environmental issues, human rights, political ethics, or economic realities?

5) As we continue to study intercultural communication, and educate others on this subject, is there anything we can do right now, or in our future careers, to bring situations like this to the awareness of others in a fair and ethical way?

Be sure to cite the text and the supplementary resource this week, as well as the article that you are asked to read for this discussion. (that is a total of three sources to cite in APA format).
