Module 2 – Case Building Blocks of Life Assignment Overview You will examine the relationship between the chemical structure of DNA and important macromolecules in your body. After completing the required readings and viewing the tutorials you will produce a short PowerPoint presentation for this Case assignment. Complete your background reading in Pain-Free Biochemistry by reading the following chapters before proceeding to the Case assignment: Topic 3: Shape molecular recognition and proteins: an example Topic 4: Proteins as chains of amino acids Topic 32: The Idea of Genes Topic 33: The chemistry of genes: DNA and the double helix and DNA Topic 34: The genetic code and mRNA Topic 35: Protein synthesis and tRNA Part I Enzymes and Proteins First complete the following tutorials that explain: •The importance of proteins as enzymes facilitate bonding •The role of peptide bonds in protein structure •An overview of the levels of organization of protein structure •Protein folding Slide 1: Introduce enzymes by defining what they are what type of macromolecule they are and examples of where they operate in the body. Slides 2-4: Define and explain the roles of protease lipase and amylase in the human body. Dedicate one slide per enzyme and include an image of the chemical and the chemical that it operates on. Explain each enzyme’s general action where it acts on its substrate and where it is utilized in the body in your notes section. Be sure to cite your sources. Part II DNA Now complete the tutorials on DNA and protein synthesis: DNA alpha helix DNA and RNA structure Protein synthesis Complete your presentation with the following slides: Slide 5: Include an image of DNA and RNA and explain the function of each in the notes section. Cite your references. Slide 6: Include an image of a nucleotide. Draw its chemical structure. Provide explanatory text in your notes sections. Cite your references. Slide 7 and 8: How does the sugar in the sugar phosphate differ between DNA and RNA? Include an image of the difference and explain it in your notes section. Cite your references. Slide 8 and 9: Diagram the nucleotides that make up DNA and RNA. Differentiate between purines and pyrimidines. Identify the functional groups in each type of nitrogenous base. Place your explanatory text in your notes sections. Cite your references. Slides 10-12: Explain transcription and translation. Identify at least one important enzyme in each process. Include diagrams of your choice on the slide and place all text in the notes section. Cite your references. Slide 13: Based on what you have learned summarize the relationships between proteins enzymes and DNA. Slide 14: List all of your references in a References section. Assignment Expectations For this Case assignment you will develop a PowerPoint Presentation that is approximately 15 slides in length and addresses the requirements outlined above. Place the text containing the answers to the questions above in the Notes section of your slide presentation. Reference all of your answers in your Notes sections with citations (Murray 2014). Your slides should contain labeled images that illustrate the text that you included in your Notes sections. Do a Google search that includes the term “image” to find diagrams of the required molecules (ie/ search for “nucleotide image”). Provide the website or reference used for each labeled image. Be sure your last slide is a references slide that contains the full reference cited on your slides. Many resources are provided for you. Include these in your references section. This assignment should not require much independent research. Privacy Policy | Contact Module 2 – SLP Building Blocks of Life STOP!!! BEFORE YOU PROCEED YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETED THE READINGS AND WATCHED THE LECTURES ON THE HOME PAGE IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THIS EXERCISE! In this Case assignment you will consider the implications of your genetic code for the assembly of macromolecules in your body. Part I – Macromolecules To complete Part I of this Case Assignment complete the tutorial on macromolecules. 1.List the four main types of polymers described in this tutorial. Include the monomers that make up each type. Include an example of each polymer in the body. 2.Now review what you have learned about DNA by completing the following tutorials: What is DNA? DNA double helix DNA and RNA structureprotein synthesis 3.Address the following question: how is the chemistry of the genetic code located on DNA related to the macromolecules in your body? Part II – Genetic In Part II of this assignment you will have the opportunity to explore the new era of personalized medicine that uses genetic mapping to determine medical treatment. Watch the NOVA video: Cracking Your Genetic Code to learn more about the genetic technology available to us and what it means for medicine ethics and the future of human society. After watching this video proceed to the following resource and address the topics below in a 2- to 3-page paper http://www.nature.com/scitable/topicpage/genetic-mutation-1127. 1.Explain what a genetic mutation is and the difference between inherited mutations versus point mutations. 2.Describe how the technology explained in “Cracking Your Genetic Code” can be used to detect mutations and predict your health. 3.Form an opinion on whether or not you support utilizing genetic mapping to develop personalized medical treatment. Find evidence to support your opinion and cite your sources. What dangers do you see dangers in knowing our personal genome? SLP Assignment Expectations This paper should be approximately 3-4 pages long and reflect the information contained in the resources provided above. When summarizing the information you viewed in the tutorials be sure to synthesize the information into your own words and cite the references. Please use complete sentences and write your paper in essay format using subheadings : Part I and Part II to organize the required topics. Privacy Policy | Contact
