The voyages of discovery by a number of Western European countries starting in the late 15th century and gaining steam in the 16th century mark the beginnings of a new world economy and growth of European political domination in certain regions. In the films, Aguirre and Roots, we learn about European contact with the New World of the Americas and Africa respectively. How were the Americas and Africa impacted by the European Age of Discovery? What changes were brought by European contact? Please cite specific historical examples from the readings in your response. What was the long term historical significance of contact between Europeans and natives of these areas? You may reference specific scenes from the films but you must demonstrate mastery of the textbook readings first and foremost.
