In our module this week we review articles from both VOGUE and BAZAAR highlighting the fashion brands that are no longer using fur in their collections. We recently learned that Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s are going fur free. Please read the article here and share your thoughts as you answer the following questions:
1. The article tells us that Macy’s and Bloomingdale’ s will be the first major department stores to ban fur and will also be some of the first in the fashion industry to “bridge the fur-free movement from luxury fashion to retail.” Does this surprise you? Should retailers continue to offer fur for those who want to buy/own it? Please be detailed in your post.
2 ” While animal rights activists championed Macy’s move, some speculated that the company was simply seeking to wrap up a business model that was no longer commercially successful for them.” What do you think? Why is the retailer waiting for 2021 to stop selling furs? Profitability or ethics?
3. I rarely, if ever, read about designers or retailers removing leather apparel and accessories from collections/merchandise offered. Why is a leather jacket (made from a baby lamb) acceptable while a fur coat is not? What are your thoughts?
