Topic 4 DQ 2
Nutrition is an essential key to health promotion. Many diseases share the same nutritional factors that affect the patient health and wellbeing. Chronic diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure, and many others, are often caused by poor dietary habits. Almost every diagnosis comes with a healthy meal plan to help promote healing. Even burn victims need a diet higher in protein to help them heal faster.
Many populations struggle with a healthy diet. The American culture has gotten used to eating fast foods or quick processed meals. However, healthy, or organic foods are more expensive, so lower economic communities struggle to maintain efficient health standards. The obesity rates in families who reside in rural areas, tend to be way higher than those in urban areas (Increasing Healthy Food Access in Rural North Carolina Food Deserts – News & Events | Health.Gov, 2019). This could be due to the lack of knowledge, because honestly, some people may not know whats good or bad for them. It could be because of the lack of resources, or both. Thats why its extremely important to educate your patients and not just assume. For example, CHF patients usually have a fluid restriction, and pregnant women should stay hydrated. What about a pregnant patient with CHF? There has to be a balance and thats where the nurse comes in with the knowledge and educates the patient.
