What is a definition of family that encompasses the different family structures prevalent today

 Re: Topic 2 DQ 1

A family is a group of individual members. Based on the family systems theory, an action done by one family member causes an effect on the other family members (Whitney, S., 2018) There are many different family structures in society. There is the traditional nuclear family. There are also extended families which includes family members not in the immediate family. A family can mean anything from a typical mother, father, and children. It can be 2 moms and kids, 2 dads and kids, and many other combinations. A family can be blood or no blood relation. When I think of family, I have many blood elated family members, but I also have friends that are not blood, but they are included in my family. The family structure can also change over time. My family for instance has changed yet again this year with the addition of my 4th child, a baby girl, in January. There are deaths, births, estrangements, and many of reasons families change. A family means something different to each person. It is very important as a nurse to see and acknowledge all the family structures. It is not our place to say what is a family and what is not in the field of nursing. We must accept what the patients call family. This will help the nurse care for and respect the patient to their fullest ability.
